Three Wallasey athletes were invited to run in an end of season meeting at Stretford. After demonstrating her fitness over 3,000 metres last week, Barbara Banks proved she could beat the top Northern runners once again, this time over 1500 metres.
As well as being an important race it was very much of a personal battle between Barbara and her great rival, Wirral A.C's international, Jane Perry, who has consistently beaten Barbara over the shorter distance this summer.
This time, however, the Wallasey girl's strength showed up, taking her to victory round the last bend in 4 mins. 36 secs. In third place was Wallasey's Margaret Ashcroft, repeating her third of last week in the 3,000 metres. Another good run and personal best, ranking her as one of the North's top runners.
At the same meeting, Dave Lockley ran in a British Milers Club invitation mile, taking 5th place in a personal best of 4 mins. 15 secs., the second fastest time ever recorded by a Wallasey athlete, and Dave's sixth consecutive personal best.
Today is the Chris Vose 7 mile Road Race at Warrington, which has attracted 300 entries and is promoted by Warrington A.C. in honour of their only international who ran for Britain in the 1920 Olympic Games. A full Wallasey contingent is expected, with, it is hoped, several runners in the first 100 places.
