A party of 15 Wallasey Athletic Club girls, the largest contingent ever competed in this year's Cheshire Cross-Country Championships at Chester.
The senior race was won convincingly by Wallasey's captain, track and cross-country international Barbara Banks, finishing the 2½ miles in 13 mins. 50 secs, after having disposed of her nearest challenger, Wirral AC track international Jane Perry, with little trouble.
Wallasey's Margaret Ashcroft took third place in 14 mins. 58 secs., with Mary Caldwell completing the team in sixth place, to give the team an easy victory.
In the intermediate race the Wallasey girls could only manage second place after a brilliant performance by Sale Harriers, who had three runners in the first six places.
Wallasey's Sylvia Brimage ran well in only her second race of the winter to take third place, while Gillian King and Lindsey Mutch took seventh and ninth places.
For the 'B' team, Susan Lloyd ran exceptionally well to finish in 10th place. Susan Carter, not at her usual high standard of fitness through exams, could only manage 16th place and Julie Halfpenny took 20th place.
Unfortunately a full team was not available for the junior event. Christine Horobin ran well, finishing seventh with Lindsey Hewson 32nd. In the minors race (Under 13) Diana Kelly showed great potential in fifth place, with Vivian Higson 16th and Llyn Carter 17th.
Today two men's and youth's teams are entered in H. S. Finney Relay Championships at Sherdley Park. St. Helens.
