Without most of their counting runners Wallasey A.C. had little hope of winning last Saturday's Mob Run held over a 5½ mile course from Liverpool Harriers H.Q. last Saturday.
This left the main Wallasey interest in whether Ron Barlow would win the individual race and how junior Brian Chalton would fare in a big field consisting mainly of seniors.
Both these 'in form' athletes duly rose to the occasions with Ron Barlow winning and Brian Chalton more than confirming his Monstre Meet form by coming home 7th in a field of over 110 runners.
Although at the start Liverpool Harriers' athletes took an early lead Pembroke's Geoff Warriner soon took over with Barlow in close attendance and these two runners were still together when they entered the finishing field.
Here Ron Barlow's strength and fitness soon showed itself, particularly as the runners tackled the hill leading to the finish and really pulling out the stops on the final straight he won convincingly by about 50 yards.
Meanwhile after a quiet start Brian Chalton had been steadily moving through the field and after some powerful running over the last mile he finished very fast and full of running in seventh position.
Third counter for Wallasey A.C. was Dave White who showed signs of his best form in finishing 30th followed by brother Pete, nursing a leg injury, in 35th place with Phil Townsend 38th, Billy Morris 43rd, David Field 51st and Ian Hunter 68th being Wallasey's other finishers.
Liverpool Pembroke gave their usual display of tight packing to win the team race while the combined youths and boys race was won by that consistent runner Clynch of Port Sunlight.
Wallasey's first man home in this race was Bill Gregory making a welcome re-appearance for the club in finishing 9th, and he was followed by Dave Duncan 17th Frank Davies and John McWilliam joint 20th, and Peter Meldrum 27th.
Next Saturday the second of this seasons mob runs will be held from Boundary Harriers H.Q. at Old Roan and today there will be a club run from our own headquarters commencing at 3.15 p.m.
