Following their great win in the Sefton Park Road Relay, Wallasey AC. today tackle another road race at Port Sunlight, where they meet other Merseyside clubs over a four-mile course around the houses on the Leverhulme Estate.
Unlike the Sefton Park race when Wallasey were able to deploy their best six distance runners. this is a straight team race with only three runners to count. With Wright, Barlow, Woolford and Mather all available, however, Wallasey should have a good chance of another success.
During the last few weeks of the cross-country season several of the younger Wallasey athletes have been engaged with a degree of success. Gordon Benson and Peter Meldrum finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the intermediate Cheshire County Schools championships. Benson particularly had a great run and was only beaten by a narrow margin for first place.
Two of Wallasey's girls travelled to Leeds two weeks ago to compete in an experimental race of 1½ miles for girls in the 13 to 15 age group. Cheryl Stevenson and Linda Breeze had both put in a sensible build-up over the past six months and this was reflected in their running. Cheryl finished 8th in 10 minutes dead from a field of over 60 runners, and Linda was also well up in 17th position.
The track season is now almost here and prospective members are invited to contact either general secretary Matt Smith, 29 Beechwood Avenue, or track captain Carl Gee, of 78 King Street (Tel New Brighton 1529).
