The last fortnight has been quiet for most athletes but some individuals have been recording good times.
Kevin Mather ran in the open mile race at Chesterfield on July 1. After a slow half-mile in 2 mins. 10 secs. Kevin ran the second part in 2 mins. 4.5 secs, to record his second fastest time of 4 mins. 14.5 secs., but in spite of this he finished third, the winner doing only one second faster.
On July 4, six athletes competed in the finals of the Liverpool Parks & Gardens Championships. The wind was very strong, and times and distances suffered. David Duncan finished third in the junior 440 yards. Kevin Mather was second in the mile in 4 mins. 20.9 secs, after one of the most exciting races seen at Wavertree for a long time, the winner being T. Dwyer (Pembroke), in 4 mins. 20.5 secs. Mather also finished 3rd in the 880 yards.
Carl Gee won the Discus with a throw of 119 ft. 6 ins. which was excellent in the prevailing conditions.
In the three miles, runners were not eager to take the lead because of the wind, and times were very slow. The race developed into a tactical battle between M. Turner (Liverpool H), G. Warriner and R. Harrison-Jones (Pembroke), and Ron Barlow, with Turner winning in 14 mins. 37 secs. and Barlow 4th. Brian Chalton finished equal seventh.
Other club members have recorded good times at Port Sunlight, the most notable being: J Morley 100 yards in 10.3 secs.; D Duncan 880 yards in 2 mins 2.9 secs.; J. H. C. Young 2 miles in 10 mins. 22 secs.
All members will be happy to know that club coach Bob McCaig is recovering well from his car accident in which he broke a leg and two ribs. Bob is now hobbling about and expects to be running in time for the Christmas Handicap. The results of the Club championships will be available next week.
