Only two of Wallasey Athletic Club's runners were active last week-end. Brian Woolford travelled to Kendal for the Windermere-Kendal 8¼ mile road race, and Kevin Mather received an invitation to run in the indoor athletics meeting at Wembley.
This meeting was televised on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, and Mather competed on both days.
In the Friday session Kevin ran in the mile race as a reserve. The strangeness of running on boards, on a track which was only 145 yards round, evidently affected him, for although he was well-placed for the first few laps, more experienced athletes soon came past and he finished well down the field. Cary Wieseiger of America won in a time of 4 mins. 12.8 secs. On the Saturday afternoon, however, Mather ran much better in the two mile 'B' race.
In a close finish he finished second, in 9 mins. 22.8 secs., behind the Portsmouth runner Tim Johnson (9 mins. 20.6 secs.).
Brian Woolford improved his time in the Windermere-Kendal race by over two minutes to finish third, behind Mike Freary (Bolton), 40 mins, exactly, and Stan Sykes (Longwood), 40 mins. 44 secs., with Brian just one second slower.
WARRINGTON RESULTS
At the Warrington track and field meeting on March 11 some numbers competed in the field events, the results of which were not available for last week's notes. Carl Gee won both the senior shot and discus events. In the shot he recorded a distance of 38ft. 7 ins. and in the discus Carl beat Brian Cain, the 1961 Northern Counties representative, with a throw of 124 ft. 5 ins. First year junior Mike Shepherd also a competed in the shot and discus, winning both with distances of 33 ft. 11½ ins. and 112 ft. 5 ins respectively.
The club had two representatives in the Youths' events. Bernie Glass was second in the shot with a putt of 41 ft 1½ ins. and third in the discus with a throw of 117 ft. 10 ins. Harry Amis was well below form in the discus and could only throw 108 ft. exactly about twenty-seven feet less than his throws in training.
Today, the International Cross-Country Championshps are being held at Sheffield and several club members are travelling to see this important race.
