GEE'S RECORD CHAMPIONSHIP DISCUS THROW OF 134ft. 4ins.
Eight of Wallasey's athletes competing in the Cheshire Championships and the Sale 15-mile road race last Saturday came home with a total of five gold and three silver medals.
At Sale, Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford spread-eagled a class field of 104 runners over 15 miles of road to take 1st and 2nd places respectively, from M Freary of Bolton. North Staffs, and Stone took the team race. Barlow's time was 78 minutes dead.
The Cheshire track and field championships were held at Winnington Park, Northwich, on a sodden grass track with an accompanying blustery wind. In the senior discus, Carl Gee achieved a personal best throw of 134ft. 4ins. in setting a new championship record. This beat the old record by over 11 feet and left the second man nearly five feet behind. Gee broke the old record with all six of his throws!
MILERS' SUCCESSES
It was a golden day, too, for Wallasey's milers. The long striding Peter Meldrum (Youths') equalled his best time of 4 mins. 42.4 secs, in a winning run from D. Moore (Winnington Park), who gave fight for three laps before being shown a clean pair of heels on Peter's run-in. It is worthy of note that Meldrum's time was 2.4 seconds faster than the Junior race, won by C. Broomfield (Warrington A.C.), from Wallasey's Dave Duncan. Dave recorded 4 mins. 48.6 secs, in a typical fighting finish, and it is debatable whether his struggle in the 880 yards only half an hour earlier had not taken too much out of him In the Junior 'half he was always 'in the picture', closely attended by team-mate John Morley, but fast finishing J. Crimes of Winnington Park had the edge, and led Dave home in 2 mins. 1.6 secs. Duncan recorded 2 mins. 2.5 secs, and Morley finished 4th in 2 mins. 10 secs.
DOUBLE FOR MATHER
In the Senior mile and 880 yards Kevin Mather scored a double. Leading from start to finish in both races, he was never really extended, and cruised home in the 880 yards with 10 yards to spare in 2 mins. 1.2 secs. The mile followed a similar pattern to his earlier race, and as conditions were all against a fast time, Kevin was content to win from H. Lund of Wirral A.C. in the slow time of 4 mins. 31.9 secs.
TODAY'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
Today, Wallasey A.C. hold their club championships at Leasowe playing fields, when some 30 athletes are expected to contest the Senior, Junior, Youth and Boys' titles. Spectators are welcome to a start at 2.30 p.m. prompt.
