Wallasey A.C. members were engaged both at home and at Liverpool's Wavertree tracks on Tuesday evening with mixed fortunes.
At Leasowe Road the club were hosts to Wallasey and Oldershaw Grammar Schools in a friendly match that proved to be closely fought. On a rain-soaked grass track John Walkins (W.G.S.), did well to take the 100 yards from Mal Dunn (W.A.C.), and both were timed at 10.4 secs. Previously Moir (W.G.S.) had sorted out a big field in the under-15 880 and ran on to win 2 mins. 20.2 secs., whilst in the long jump Mal Dunn out-jumped his rivals with a best leap of 18 ft. 8½ ins. The 440 yds. was a tragedy for Robin Tarrant (W.A.C.) who, when leading at the half-way stage, had the misfortune to run into two young children who had strayed on to the track. Newall (W.G.S.) passed him and went on to win in 54.9 secs., whilst Robin finished last in a race he was favourite to win.
The 1-mile team race developed into a procession after the halfway stage. Mark Aldridge (W.A.C.), was an easy winner from David Field (W.C.), in 4 mins. 48.4 secs, and the club took the team race with Harry Amis running into 9th place to complete the scoring.
Cliff Hilliker (W.G.S.), won the under-17 discus with a good throw of 131 ft. 8 ins. and proceedings reached a climax with the relay, which the club took in 46.9 secs, from Oldershaw G.S., 47.9 secs., and W.G.S. third in 48.8 secs.
The result of the match was a win for W.G.S. with 47 pts. from W.A.C. 45 pts., and O.G.S. 35 pts.
At Wavertree for the Liverpool Parks finals, Kevin Mather showed that he is still not back to peak fitness by running the 3 miles in 14 mins. 38 secs., but this was good enough to place him second to Bob Medows (Sutton H.), who won in 14 mins. 21 secs.
In the same race Brian Woolford was third in 14.41 whilst in the 1 mile John Young came 3rd in 4 mins. 26 secs., to T. Dwyer (Pembroke). 4 mins. 23.6 secs.
