Running in the Waterloo Harriers' 7¾ mile road race last Saturday Wallasey failed to retain team title won last year.
Despite valiant efforts by the leading trio of Brian Woolford (21), Ron Barlow (22) and Kevin Mather (27) Wallasey finished in 5th place, which considering the strength of the opposition this year, was a very creditable performance - in a field of 235 runners that included over 30 internationals. One award did come Wallasey's way, however, that of the first Liverpool & District team to finish.
Other club members who competed were Roy Parry (105), John Young (132), David Field (154) and Brian Chalton (167).
The individual winner was Ron Hill, Bolton UH, in 37 mins. 22 secs., a new record, beating by 37 secs, the time set up last year by Brian Craig of Blackpool. The severity of the competition this year can be seen from the times of the leading runners, the first six men home all beating the old course record.
Wallasey's leading trio were all inside two mins, behind the winner, a performance which speaks well of Wallasey's chances in the forthcoming cross-country championships.
The team event was won oy the Dublin club Donore Harriers, 2nd were Portsmouth AC, 3rd Bristol AC, 4th Derby AC, and 5th Wallasey AC.
This Saturday sees the second of the Liverpool & District Mob Runs, to be held at Sherdley Park, Sutton. The distance will be approximately 6 miles and it is hoped for a good turnout from Wallasey AC.
Next Saturday sees the Wallasey School Championships, which as usual will be run from the Club Headquarters, and as many members as possible are requested to attend to give a helping hand to the organising officials.
