Whilst Lynn Davies was setting the London White City Stadium alight with two magnificent United Kingdom records last Saturday. Wallasey's Brian Woolford and Ron Barlow were involved in a tough 20-mile road race not far away. As members of Cheshire's trio in this event (the 3rd runner being Leo Carrol of the Wirral A.C.) they were placed 2nd of 28 counties competing, in a temperature of 74°f.
Individually, the race was a triumph for Juan Taylor (Warwickshire) who set a new winning record of 1 hour 40 mins. He was followed home by Liverpool's Mike Turner (Lancs.) with E. Austin (Worcs.) 3rd.
Brian Woolford ran faster than last year, yet such was the 'field' that he dropped four places to finish 6th Carrol was 19th and Ron Barlow, who was troubled by the intense heat was 21st. Lancashire won the team title with 22 points; Cheshire were 2nd. with 42 points, and Warwickshire 3rd. 52 points.
GRADED RACES
In the graded races at Port Sunlight on Wednesday evening last week a much improved Les Watcham recorded his best mile time to date. Still only 14 years of age, he ran a well judged 5 mins. 12.4 secs, to knock something like 12 secs off his previous best.
In the same event Dave Adair, whose best distance is probably the 880 yards, recorded a good 5.19, whilst new member Eric Griffiths did 5.27.5 and Colin McDonnell 5.29.
Ian Wilson ran 2nd in his heat of the 100 yards in 11.6 and followed this with a determined 59.3 for the 440 yards In the 2nd heat of the ¼ mile the senior girls were placed 5th and 6th, Margaret Ashcroft being timed at 69.1 and Barbara Banks at 73.2. In the senior heat John Morley did 53.2 (3rd) and David Field 58.3 (4th).
