As members of the Cheshire team competing in the All-England Schools' Athletic Championships today at Hendon, Middlesex, John Watkins and Ian Wilson carry the hopes and wishes for success of Wallasey A.C.
John (now in the intermediate class) is competing in the 100 yards and relay, and Ian in the 440 yards, and both boys will really have to 'go' to make the finals in competition with the cream of the country's schoolboys.
Ian as a 13½-year-old junior must be one of the youngest athletes at the meeting.
Among Wallasey A.C.'s members who travelled to Widnes last Saturday for the police handicap sports, the best placed was Robin Tarrant, who took second prize in the long jump. In the 2-mile team race Wallasey, as holders, could only finish in 4th place, with Ron Barlow 2nd, close behind the winner, Manchester international Brian Hall.
At Great Crosby, in the N.W. schools triangular contest. John Watkins won the 100 yards in a creditable 10.6 secs whilst Cliff Hilliker took the discus with 111 ft.
Today there will be a training session at club H.Q. next Saturday at 2.30, the club hold their track and field championships for all age groups and, the annual photograph will be taken at 3 p.m.
