Today, at the headquarters, in Leasowe Road, Wallasey Athletic Club are holding their track and field championships for 1964, and two new age groups have been added this year to account for the recent influx of young members.
Some 40 competitors are expected to take part and spectators will be assured of an interesting afternoon's entertainment. The first event is at 2.30 p.m. with a break for a club photograph at 3 p.m.
ALL-ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
At last week's All-England championships at Hendon, Middlesex, Ian Wilson ran well to record 57 secs, for the 440 yards but could only finish 4th and so was knocked out in his heat, but as he is still only 13, he will have next year in the same age group to go one better. His target next season is 52 secs.. which is 2.4 secs, faster than this year's winning time.
Valerie Metcalf was also with the Cheshire team and had the misfortune to record her best putt in the shot outside the 65 degrees sector and so did not qualify. John Watkins was absent through illness.
At the graded meeting at Port Sunlight on Wednesday, Barrie Smith ran a well-judged race to win his heat of the 880 yards in a personal best time of 2 mins. 11 secs, with newcomer Richard Gulborn 6th in 2-14, which was also his best performance. In the sprints John Morley was 2nd in 11-1 and Carl Gee 3rd in 11.4 whilst Les Watcham followed a 2-19 half with an 11 mins. 6 secs. 2 mile in which he was placed 6th. Brian Chalton was 4th in his heat of the 2 miles in 10.13 and Barrie Smith put up another best with 2nd place in 10-36.2.
Teams for Monday's Lever Trophy meeting are now on the notice board. New comers will be welcomed any Monday or Thursday evening 7 to 9 p.m. or Saturday 2 to 5 p.m.
