Saturday saw the Sefton Park Road Relay back at its old venue, round Sefton Park. After the first lap with the field starting to spread out and definite lack of course marshals, one or two athletes found that they had gone wrong.
Each runner had to complete a lap of 3¼ miles before handing over to the next man. Some of the competitors, obviously enjoying the change of scenery, ran down to the lake and back whilst also competing in the race.
First man away for Wallasey 'A' team, David Field, returned a time of 18 minutes, coming back in 7th position. Brian Woolford, who took over, did a lap of 17 mins. 48 secs, and appeared to be suffering from a recent holiday in the sun. John Hughes was third man away, and after adding a bit to the course to suit his taste, recorded a creditable time of 18 mins. 4 secs. John Wright ran the 4th leg with his usual verve and recorded 17 mins. 4 secs. John Young ran very well in 18 mins. 13 secs., as he has only been training a short while. Ron Barlow on the last leg recorded the fastest time, running very strongly for 16 minutes 10 seconds. This brought Wallasey to 5th overall position and the team's time to 1 hour 45 minutes 19 secs, for the 19½ miles.
Wallasey 'B' team were led by Mike Teehan who recorded 20 minutes 35 seconds on the first lap. Carl Gee took a detour to the lake and back whilst recording a time of 24 mins. 22 secs. Ted Bollard also made a few detours to suit his taste and obviously added some extra yards, because his time of 25 mins. 45 secs, certainly did not do him justice. Tony Parry was 4th man round in 20 mins. 22 secs., and Brian Chalton took it easily and recorded 19 minutes 20 secs. Again the last man recorded the fastest leg; this time it was Mark Aldridge, running without any marshals marking the course, and he recorded a very good time of 18 minutes 6 secs. The total time for the 'B' team was 2 hours 8 mins. 30 secs., just one lap astern of the 'A' team.
Wirral Harriers won the event, with Liverpool second.
Today there will be a run from club headquarters. All active members are asked to come and train and new members will be made welcome.
