Young Dave Lockley proved himself a worthy boys' cross-country champion last Saturday by spread-eagling a field of 14 runners over a testing 3-mile course.
That he could leave Les Watcham 41 seconds in arrears is in itself a testimony of strong running, for Les is no slouch over this distance and together they can provide a two-pronged spearhead in Wallasey Athletic Club's attempt to win district honours this winter.
In third place was diminutive John Jones, who was closely followed by much improved Peter Emery and Dave Adair in 4th and 5th places respectively.
John Warrilow took 6th place then six runner came home in the space of 11 seconds - in order, Bobby McCaig, Teddy Oldham, Ian Wilson, David Warrilow, Peter Hanna and Mike Potter, with Peter Lewis and John Pugh bringing up the rear.
The final breakdown into age groups was Under 14 years; 1st I. Wilson; 2nd, H. Potter; 3rd, P. Lewis; Under 15 years; 1st D. Lockley; 2nd, J. Jones; 3rd, J. Warrilow; 4th, D. Warrilow; 5th, P. Hanna; Under 16 years; 1st L. Watcham; 2nd, P. Emery; 3rd, D. Adair; 4th, R. McCaig; 5th, E. Oldham; 6th, J. Pugh.
BARRIE SMITH TAKES YOUTHS' TITLE
By comparison with the boys' event, the youths' championship over a 5-mile course proved a much closer affair. With a much depleted field due to schools and outside commitments, only three runners fought out this race, and the closing stages proved to be very exciting. On entering the field and with the finishing line within 300 yards, Barrie Smith held a lead over Allan Keating of some 50 yards. The run in should thus have been just a formality, but Allan had other ideas and "kicked" so hard that Barrie was hard put to hold him off but did so in a sprint finish which gave him a two seconds margin at the tape.
Newcomer David Lindfield, although not racing fit yet, ran well despite taking a wrong turning en route, and the finishing times were; 1st, B Smith 27.13; 2nd, A Keating 27.15; 3rd, D Lindfield 33.21,
TODAY'S RACE
Owing to injuries, Wallasey A.C. will not be contesting today's Waterloo Road Race as a team but it is expected that the club will be represented by individuals, the most notable being Ron Barlow, who will have to be at his best to contain the score of internationals taking part.
For the remainder of the members there will be a club run starting at 2:30 p.m. And new members, both male and female will be made welcome at the club H.Q. in Leasowe Road.
Ends
