Ron Barlow upheld the name of Wallasey Athletic Club last Saturday by winning the 8¼ mile Windermere to Kendal Road Race. He was with the leading group until near the end, when he strode ahead to record a time of 40 minutes 42 seconds.
Second man home, about 25 yards behind, was C. Robinson (Rochdale Harriers), 42 mins. 49 secs., followed closely by A Platt (Bolton United Harriers), 42 mins. 52 secs. Robinson has already competed in international races and is running well this season, so Barlow s performance does justice to his claim to an international vest which he will earn at Brussels on March 27.
Today, Wallasey A.C's boys are rather depleted. A team of Les Watcham (captain), Ray Kay, Paul Spencer and Dave Adair will run in the Sutton Harriers' West Sutton Ward Trophy race of 2 miles over two laps. The senior race, covering one 1 mile lap and three 2 mile laps, has only one Wallasey A.C. entry, which is rather disappointing, since the trio of road runners of last year were almost invincible. Dave Lockley and John Jones will be running in the English Schools' cross-country championships - both runners are capable of very good performances and should be well placed at the finish. P. Emery and Bob McCaig are running in the Northern Schoolboys' championships at Stockport.
It should be noted by all athletes that the track season starts officially on April 1, and that training should now be well on the way for the track. There is a track meeting organised for May 1, against Wigan A.C., so athletes are asked to start concentrating on their intended distances soon, in plenty of time for the match
