A boys' team and a youths' team from Wallasey A.C. competed in two cross-country relays at Warrington on Saturday.
Four members of the club each ran the one-mile leg to give Wallasey 10th place out of 28 teams in the boys'- race.
Les Watcham recorded 5 mins. 23 seconds to finish the first leg in 19th place, and handed over to Ray Kay, who brought the team to 16th place, in five minutes 13 seconds. John Jones set a cracking pace and raised Wallasey's position to 12th, recording 5 mins. 6 secs. Dave Lockley took over the last leg determined not to bettered by John Jones, and comfortably broke 5 mins, whilst raising the team a further two places. His very creditable time of 4 mins. 56 secs, brought the total time for the team to 20 mins. 38 secs.
Wallasey A.C. were unable to sport a second boys' team but two members ran on the first leg to gain experience, Dave Adair and Bobby McCaig, who recorded times of 5 mins. 47 secs, and 5 mins. 51 secs, respectively.
In the youths' mile relay the Wallasey team were not quite so well placed, although they put in some good running. Barrie Smith ran the first leg in the fast time of 5 mins. 3 secs, and handed over in 11th place to Dave Grennan, who put in a good lap of 5 mins. 14 secs., with the team in 16th place Alan Keating ran the third leg strongly in the same time as Dave Grennan, 5 mins. 14 secs., to raise the team to 14th place, and John Adamson made the last leg in 5 mins. 26 secs., the team dropping one place to finish 15th.
Total time for the youths was 20 mins. 57 secs.
Next Wednesday, April 14, Wallasey A.C. turn in their cross-country and track equipment for a football match against Moreton Youth Centre, at Castleway North playing-fields, kick-off 6.45.
