The Sutton, St. Helens, road races have attracted a big entry today and with more than a dozen inter-nationals in the senior race over a 7-mile course, the programme reads like a "who's who" of athletes.
Wallasey's main interest will be with Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford, and they will have the support of junior Barrie Smith, who competes in this event for the first time.
The 2-mile race for boys, gives Wallasey a chance for team honours, with an "A" and "B" team entered.
Dave Lockley will be hard to beat over this course and with support from Paul Barrie, Johnny Jones and Melvin Schless. should bring home a team award.
The 'B' team will be Les Watcham, Dave Adair, Philip Wealthy and Ian Wilson, with Mike Potter and Peter Lewis entered as individuals.
Barrie Smith 74th IN INTER-COUNTIES
Barrie Smith travelled to Leicester with the Cheshire cross-country team last Saturday to compete in the English Junior cross-country championships and, from 170 starters, finished 74th, a creditable performance, in his first county match.
Barrie was second counter for the Cheshire team, which returned in 14th place.
WALKER AND McNAMEE FOR CHESHIRE TODAY
The English Schools' cross-country championships are being held in the Midlands today and Wallasey A.C. have two representatives in the county team, namely Steve Walker and Mike McNamee.
Last Saturday Steve helped the boys' team to take 7th place in the cross-country relays at Stretford. The positions of the club runners were: - 1st leg. Steve Walker 7th in 10.33; Paul Barrie took second leg and recorded 10.55 for 12th place; with Dave Lockley on last leg with a great 9.52 which, closed the team into 7th place.
The "B" team fielded Johnny Jones, 9th in 10.27: Mel Schless 9th in 10.42 and Dave Adair 13th in 11.01.
