Wallasey's cross-country runners will be involved on both sides of the Mersey today as a clash in fixtures divides local interest between the first Liverpool & District League race and the Wirral Schools event.
The league race, which will be held at Woolton, is over a 5 mile course for seniors and juniors. There are also separate races for both youths and boys of 3 and 2 miles respectively.
The annual Wirral Schools event will be held at Port Sunlight over a similar course to last year, but as holders of the senior title, Wallasey Grammar School will have to pull out all stops to retain their position their position as their leading runner of last year, Johnny Jones, has left school. However, the team have been packing well in recent races. If Melvin Schless of Oldershaw Grammar is entered, it could well be a double for Wallasey as Mel must be considered favourite for the individual title.
PROMISING YOUTHS
Today's opening runs should be the forerunners of a successful season for Wallasey's youth section and the pre-Christmas road races will provide a useful springboard to the crowded championship season.
The nearest venue is St. Helens for the district championships whilst the Northern is being held in the north-east and the English at Sutton Cold held.
Another attractive fixture has been added to this winter's calendar and these are the Aaron races for boys and youths at Leeds on November 11th.
TRACK LEAGUE
At a recent meeting of the Liverpool & District track and field league it was decided to hold all eight meetings during the period, April 6th to May 28th 1968, and Lingham track has been awarded the second meeting on Saturday, April 20th, with a possible duplicate meeting later on.
The proposed league will embrace all the track and field events for men with selected races for women and full details will be circulated well before the first meeting.
RECORDS PLEASE
Many club records have been broken during the past track season and members are requested to assist in keeping the records board up to date by handing their personal achievements to C. W. Gee or M. A. Smith as soon as possible.
