Although there were excellent entries, capital racing, and gloriously fine weather the attendance at the Liverpool Athletic Grounds on Saturday, where the Working-Men's Conservative Association were holding their annual meeting, fell far short of expectations.
In addition to the usual prizes, the winners in the 100 yards and two laps cycle scratch races received a gold commemoration medal.
The former handicap produced good racing in the preliminary round, and in the semi-finals the finishes were also excellent. The first of these was won by C. S. Ovington, Liverpool H. and A.C., 10¾ from F. Archer, St. Helens Recs. 9¾ in 10 1-5sec., while in the second spin T. H. Lines, Liverpool H. and A.C., 10¼ beat J. Simon, Salford H., 7. in even time. In the final Lines made short work of his opponents, and won readily from Ovington, with the pulling-up Archer some distance away third.
Archer, 25, a powerful runner, soon showed improvement on the above form, for striding out in fine style he quickly took up a winning position in the 300 yards, which he annexed from J. A. Williams, Richmond H., 30, and A. Barnes, Tranmere Institute FC., 24. Nearly all of the 46 entered for the Half-mile (local) turned out. this event being divided into two heats. In the first spin H. J. Lyon, Ravenhead H. and A C., 29. disposed of W. A. A. Jeffrey, North Liverpool G.H., 34. D. Large, Prescot A.C., 36, and H. M. Finegan, Richmond H., 42, in 2min. 5 4-5sec., while in exactly similar time F. L. Thornton, Wallasey A.C., 42 had little difficulty in disposing of the opposition, of which A. G. Roberts, West Cheshire H., 10 C. H. Spence, Wallasey AC., 32. and J. J. Cranny, Liverpool H. and A.C . 27, proved the best. The final was won by Thornton after a good race with Lyon and Roberts, who finished second and third respectively.
