There was a large attendance of members on Tuesday evening at the Tower Grounds, who were disappointed at the poor weather conditions that prevailed.
The 220 yards was won with a close margin by E. Price from Liggins and J. E. Sherlock, out of a heat of eight runners. Time, 24 secs. The remainder of the programme had to be abandoned owing to the rain. The President A. G. Nicholson and the vice-president (Mr. W. S. Brookes) officiated as judges, whilst Mr. W. C. Richards acted as starter.
The judges remarked upon the growth of the club, which had greatly exceeded their expectations, and hoped that the members would do their utmost to support the Gala programme.
With regard to the Gala, the last date by which entries have to be sent in is Wednesday, June 27th, and not July 2nd as previously stated in error. Prospective entrants should take particular notice of this, and try to send in their entry forms before June 27th, as the committee will be very hard put to it if everything is left to the last moment.
The entry forms are obtainable from : the hon. secretary, Mr. H. S. Heighley., 66 Grove-road; the hon. treasurer, Mr. W. C. Richards, 4 Newlands-drive ; and the hon. asst, secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive. The entrance for each event is 6d. Before being allowed to enter for the races, competitors must be either members or second claim members. For joining the club as a second cla.im member a fee of 6d. is charged, which is not exorbitant by any means. To become an ordinary member of the club the yearly subscriptions are as follow : 7/6 for members over 21 years; 5/- for members between the ages of 18 and 21 years; and 2/6 for members under 18 years. The entrance fee for members under 18 years is purely nominal, and those who are desirous to do some running should immediately get in touch with the hon. secretary before the better part of the season, is over. There are a few football players who have joined the club to keep themselves fit during the summer, so as to be in trim for the coming season. Football players in general should take special notice of this fact.
