Cross-Country Title Draws Big Names
County athletic competition had its origin in the South of England, and the movement became very popular both on the track and over the country.
The idea spread to the Midlands and gradually interested the North. Now one can state that county competition has come to stay. Both Lancashire and Cheshire have in fact been placed twice in the inter-county track and field event championship.
Cheshire, however, are first in the field with their own cross-country championships, which are being held on Saturday next from the headquarters of Winnington Park A.C. near Northwich.
A youth's county championship will be staged over three miles, for athletes under 18 years of age, and a good entry has been received. The senior race is over seven miles of good country. Teams taking part include; Crewe A.C., East Cheshire H., Macclesfield H., Sale H., Wallasey H., Wirral A.C., and Winnington Park. Individual entries include A.E. Tyrer (Sutton H., ex N.C.A.A. champion and N.C.A.A. marathon champion); and several from Manchester A.C.
After the race the team to represent Cheshire in the Counties Athletic Union Cross-Country Championships at Worsley on January 15, will be selected.
