With over half the track reason gone, Wallasey Athletic Club's record to date is far from inspiring, but hardly a disgrace, Wallasey's weakness at moment seems to lie in her lack of numbers of keen senior members who, even if not active, could assist the club in other ways.
Obviously we must look to our younger members to supply senior teams in a few years. However, it is a sad fact that a great many erstwhile, keen young athletes seem to lose interest after completing their national service. It is to be hoped that this unfortunate pattern of events will not be continued as, at the moment, we have some very promising young runners in the forces.
Fortunately we also have some keen young athletes who are very good and who have still time to go before commencing national service, Ron Barlow and Tom Kennedy in particular should develop into fine athletes. Their race over the ½-mile at the Gala sports proved one of the highlights of the meeting, the race soon developed into a tussle between these two, none of the other competitors being able to stand the pace; Ron's victory was justly deserved, and his time was excellent, though I would not like to forecast the result of the next race when these two meet.
Wallasey's other competitors at this meeting did extremely well, Len Platt winning the long jump and 100 yards sprint very easily. Maurice Price, a little below form, finishing 3rd in the 100 yards senior. Archie Millington, our latest sprint find, did very well to gain a second in the junior 100 yards, while John Hodges was fourth over the same distance in the youths' age group. Carl Gee was the only field event man to do even appreciably well. He was fourth in the weight. The junior 1 mile attracted a good entry and provided an interesting race. Brian Fozard, an old Wallaseyan now living in Chester, just gaining the verdict from David Eccles, the Lancashire junior champion in the first time of 4 minutes 33 seconds.
Anyone who is interested in joining the club is asked to contact either Mr. R. F. Hubbard, 44 Tollemache St., Wallasey. Mr C. Gee, 78 King St , Wallasey, or Miss J. Massey, 200 Seaview Rd, Wallasey.
