Wallasey A.C. continued their run of victories at Leasowe last Saturday, when they soundly defeated Wirral A.C. and Warrington A.C.
The Seniors and Juniors raced over six miles of heavy marshland, and soon after the start, Wallasey were on top with six red vests in the first ten. After the first of the two laps, John Wright, Ron Barlow and Pete White were obviously satisfied that they had built up an impregnable lead and closed up together, and this trio eventually finished in line for first equal place in 33 mins. 44 secs. (to the evident disgust of vice-president Hubbard). They were followed by Dave White 7th, Phil Townsend 11th and Tony Townsend 12th, to complete the club's counters. In close pursuit came Bob Johnston, Vince Bayliss and Ian Bonner. A very pleasing result, especially as the counting six, except John Wright, are all juniors, and will be taking on easier competition than this in the various local junior championships.
To-day, the club travel to Port Sunlight for a friendly match. As many members as possible are asked to turn out. Intending competitors meet at Park Station at 2 p.m.
SUNDAY TRAINING
The track at Lingham Lane now in good condition, is open on Sunday mornings, and for the small charge of sixpence, athletes have changing and washing facilities and the use of an excellent cinder track.
After spending two years in the South of England, I am amazed at the comparative lack of facilities in the North. To the best of my knowledge, Wallasey is the only Merseyside Council to provide anything like the facilities to be found in almost every borough in the London County Council area. I would like to see the Moreton track used much more, and invite any local athletes to meet me there on any Sunday morning with a view to forming a winter training group. This invitation is also open to field event specialist as there are concrete circles provided - a luxury which I have not seen on many tracks.
