With their comfortable victory over Sefton H. and Waterloo A.C. at Crosby last Saturday, Wallasey A.C. clinched their position as runners-up in the Merseyside District Cross-Country League.
As this is the first time the club have ever done anything but support the rest of the league, the members are to be congratulated on their feat. It is a long time since the Club had such a potentially powerful team.
The Senior race at Crosby over a course of approximately seven miles had about thirty starters, including several 'guests' from Preston A.C.
At the end of the first lap Wallasey's trio of White, Wright and Barlow were trailing Brian Fozard, the Sefton star who was strong favourite. After another mile these four took a wrong turn and found themselves some 200 yards in arrears, but fortunately, there was enough distance left to enable John Wright and Peter White to haul back the deficit. After a close finish, they ended up with White first, and Wright a very close third. Ron Barlow's fourth place is to be commended especially as this is his first season of the longer stuff. Next up at 7th was Dave White, who seems to improve every time out. Tony and Phil Townsend, two more juniors, finished 11th and 13th, while John Lynch 19th and John Winrow 24th, completed the counters and gave Wallasey a 24 point victory over Sefton.
In the Boys' and Youths' race over 3 miles we saw several of our younger members out, and I feel most encouraged that so many younger runners support the club. In third place was Billy Morris, the Wallasey Schools' champion, followed by two very improved runners, Brian Chalton and John Young in 6th and 7th places. Dave Noble and Ken Williamson did well to finish 10th and 12th, while Pete Davies, G. Howard, and D. Shepherd only need more experience before they too are up at the front.
Today the Club travel to Port Sunlight to contest the H. S. Finney Trophy. The team should meet at Birkenhead Park Station at 1.0 p.m. or travel independently to The Oval by 51 or 52 bus.
