In a recent lecture on 'Athletics in Action' Geoff Dyson, the A.A.A. chief coach, recommended consistent rather than prolonged training schedules.
That consistency in training bears the fruit is demonstrated this week by John Winrow and Dennis Kelly. John won the club novice event - a race for members who have not won a medal in open competition - having set his mind on this award and trained accordingly. Dennis trained regularly during his national service period and was rewarded by finishing 58th in the Finney 5-miles team race.
Against some of the best runners on Merseyside, Wallasey finished 8th as a team, and also lost to Sefton Harriers in the postponed league fixture run in conjunction. Wallasey's placings were :-
Finney team race Sefton event
Roy Parry 48th 4th
Don Anderson 53rd 6th
Dennis Kelly 58th 9th
Colin Harris 61st 10th
Dave Standfast 63rd 11th
Hugh Pritchard 67th 12th
John Winrow 71st -
Alan Clarke 76th -
Total points being 497 and 52, Sefton's points being 26.
Roy Parry and Don Anderson could not keep up their strong challenge throughout the race as neither were completely fit following illness. Bob Fullerton 80th, Ramsey Hewson 82nd, and Ray Scammell 91st, also completed the course.
In the individual youth's race over 3 miles Graham Woolford ran well over a very muddy and slippery course to finish 7th. Peter White, Roy Shaw, Les Williams, Brian Hamilton and Ray Wood finished 15th, 18th, 23rd, 25th and 27th. Bill Farrell was injured during the running, but went on to finish the course.
The final league fixture against Liverpool Harriers is this Saturday, 12th, at Woolton. Meet at Pier Head bookstall 2 o'clock for No. 4 or 5 Corporation bus from Queen Victoria's Monument, Castle Street.
The club Christmas Handicap is being run on December 19th, and the club would be pleased if any officials or senior members who would like to donate prizes would contact Carl Gee, 78 King Street, as soon as possible.
