The first of this season's area championships will be decided this Saturday at Warrington when the usual large field of West Lancashire novices will race over a three-mile course.
It is now many years since this championship was won by Wallasey Athletic Club, but the Wallasey team this Saturday has quite a capable look with Alan Clarke and Dave Standfast likely to be most prominent.
These two promising athletes will be ably supported by Dave Johnson, Frank Newton, Alan Moore, Ray Scammell and John Winrow, and it is hoped that the team will achieve a creditable placing despite the high standard in this championship.
The team and supporters who are asked to meet cross-country secretary Ray Woolley at the booking office inside Central Station, Liverpool, at 1.15 p.m. prompt.
Last Saturday Wallasey A.C. were defeated by Liverpool University and Liverpool Harriers in an inter-club fixture at Liverpool when the seniors raced over a 6½-mile course.
The first man home was Beecroft, of Liverpool University who finished in 38 mins. 40 secs. with Wallasey's Bob Johnston occupying second position in 39 mins. dead.
Other Wallasey placings were Eric Maddock 15th, Arnold Dinsdale 16th, Dave Standfast 17th, and Ram Hewson 23rd.
The Youths' event was won by W. Parr, of Liverpool Harriers, when Colin Harris in 8th position was Wallasey's first man home, being followed by Dave Johnson and Les Williams in 11th and 12th positions respectively.
For those not travelling to Warrington there will be a club run from H.Q. commencing at 3 p.m.
