Wallasey Athletic Club entertained Dunlop Speke Athletic Club on Thursday of last week in a comprehensive contest covering 18 track and field events for seniors, juniors and women, at Leasowe Road Playing Fields, Wallasey.
Ted Bollard and Matt Smith, both of W.A.C., achieved creditable doubles, Ted winning the long jump (18ft. 4½ins.) and javelin (132ft.), and Matt the high jump (5ft.3ins.) and hop, step and jump (36ft.). Ray Owen won the senior discus with a throw of 104 ft., which is a good performance since he was a junior last week, and followed this with a hop step and jump of 35ft., and a senior shot put of 30ft.
After Tony Dickinson had won the half-mile in 2mins. 11secs., his younger brother Denis set a fast pace in the mile which extended John MacFarland enabling him to win in the excellent time of 4.42. Against poor opposition John Laurie won the hammer throw with 124ft.
The Hon. Secretary of Wallasey Athletic Club (R. F. Hubbard, B'head 3550) would like to hear form any former athlete in the district who is prepared to devote part of his or her spare time to coaching men or women members of the club at the Leasowe Road Playing Fields on week nights.
