Last Saturday, the first in October, marked the opening of the cross-country season and Wallasey Athletic Club, after two preliminary canters, had three packs out for training, youths and slows together, medium paced and fast.
One of the club's aims is to build up and train a senior (over 21) team for the Liverpool & District, West Lancs., Northern and National Championships next spring. Already there are indications that Wallasey possesses distance runners of the class necessary to achieve success in these championships. Pre-war medal winners who have returned to the club after war service in G. K. Andrew, J. S. Arkless, R. Fishwick and J. M. Rimmer, are backed up by stylish young George Williams, one of the best in the North and other very promising athletes. The team will be welded together and actively coached and prepared by J. Edwards, the Liverpool & District champion.
From this it must not be assumed that Wallasey A.C. are concentrating on training racing teams, for it is the policy of the club to foster all forms of athletics and cater for every class of athlete from the slowest and youngest to the fastest and oldest.
During the summer Wallasey Athletic Club competed in the Liverpool & District Track League and the Liverpool & District Field Events League and the results were announced last week.
Wallasey were a close second to Liverpool Harriers in the Field Events League and fourth also to Liverpool Harriers in the Track League, results which reflect great credit on the Wallasey Track Secretary, B. O. Kivlin, not only as an administrator, but also as the mainspring of the competitive teams.
Hon. Sec., Wallasey Athletic Club is R. F. Hubbard, 39, Beech Road, Birkenhead, and 'phone, Birkenhead 3550.
