Fine weather combined with excellent organisation provided the Liverpool & District Country Union with one of then most successful "Monstre Meets," when the opening run of the cross-country season was held at Wallasey last Saturday.
Many notable athletes were gathered together in Leasowe Rd., "stars" of yesteryear including R. Bridge, several of whose world walking records still stand and who is now president of the Union; A. G. Nicholson, president of Wallasey A.C., the West Lancs. Cross-Country Association and the Northern Cross-Country Association, and J. T. Rimmer, former Northern champion and conqueror of the redoubtable Shrubb.
Two packs. were out, Novices, who covered about five miles of road and country, and Seniors, who ran about two miles farther, a total of 128 runners representing 10 clubs.
In the Senior pack was C. Kelly, of Liverpool Pembroke A.C., Irish International, holder of many half and one mile championships, but he did not make any serious effort in the mile break, which he had already won twice.
Winners of the mile breaks were :
NOVICE.
1- K. Marsden, L/pool H. & A.C.
2- J. Cope, Waterloo H. & A.C.
3- F. Daly, Crawfords A.C.
SENIORS.
1- A. E. Gallagher, L. H. & A.C.
2- E. Partridge, L'pool H. & A.C.
3- E. Hall, Wirral, A.C.
Gallagher, the Senior winner, has many victories at one mile to his credit and is a backmarker on the track at this distance. First Wallasey men to finish were D. Dickinson 6th and R. Bee 7th.
The whole meeting was organised by Wallasey A.C. under the supervision of its very capable and energetic hon. secretary, R. F. Hubbard. Thanks are due to the 1st Wallasey Scout Troop with their Scoutmaster, Mr. Almond, for the loan of premises and invaluable assistance.
