On Saturday the School took part in the first Northern Public Schools Cross-Country Championships organised by the Manchester Athletic Club.
The course was one of 2½ miles in Platt Fields, Manchester. Six formed the team and the first three placings were taken. The event was won by Rossall School, who had the first two men home. They scored 17 points. Wallasey Grammar School and Stoneyhurst each scored 26 to tie for second place. The second place was eventually awarded to Wallasey in consideration of the position of their fourth runner. Some 24 schools were represented. E. C. Foster ran well to finish fourth, but the best performance of the day, as far as Wallasey were concerned, was by R. E. Smith. Starting at the back of the Grammar School column, the equivalent of giving a large proportion of the field a considerable start, he pulled up well and put in a very fine finish to come in ninth. T. G. Peirson was Wallasey's third counting runner finishing 13th. C. S. Coleman settled the question of the tie by finishing 26th. G. B. Peltor was 39th and J. E. Coffee 40th. Wallasey's complete learn, therefore, finished in the first forty of a field of over 140. I
The Inter-House Cross-Country Runs took place on Wednesday. The course was heavy underfoot and there was a strong wind blowing. Despite this, the time for the Senior run was better than that of last, year over the same course. New Brighton House won both the Senior and the Junior runs and their "packing" in the Senior run, in which they had seven in the first eleven, was excellent. Seacombe were 2nd, Liscard 3rd, Egremont 4th, and Wallasey 5th in the Senior run. In the Junior run Egremont were 2nd, Wallasey 3rd, Seacombe 4th, and Liscard 5th. |
