At the Cheshire Championships, held at Ashton-under-Lyne on Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club fielded runners in colts, boys and senior events,
Neil Tunstall, one of the youngest-ever to run in a County Championship in Wallasey's scarlet strip, achieved a creditable 61st in a field of over 90. His eldest brother, Mike, running in the boy's event, led off in the company of Chris Wright and soon four boys could be seen as contenders for the title.
A burst by a very strong Manchester AC boy provided a definite leader with Sale second and Wallasey third and fourth..
The ground, already a morass, soon took toll of the runners and the individuals finished with Wallasey's Chris Wright in third position, Mike Tunstall in fourth.
The full team of four, which really counted, were quite a way behind in 34th and 35th positions. The team finished equal fifth, which, though disappointing, was a good achievement in the conditions.
In the senior event John Wright, a veteran, finished 56th in 43 mins 03 secs and Don Stroud 81st in 51 mins 05 secs.
This Saturday morning at Port Sunlight the Wirral Schools Championships are being held and in the afternoon the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championships at West Derby.
Wallasey's younger members are precluded from this latter event because of the schools fixture, a pity that the two bodies did not consult each other.
