The Wallasey Athletic Clubs' annual Christmas handicap race was held on Saturday over the usual three-mile course along Leasowe Road, embankment and shore.
The fastest time of the day, 17min. 41sec. was run by Bob Brimage. John Wright was only 10 seconds slower with 17min. 51sec. and he, in turn, was only 20 seconds faster than both Chris Wright and Rod Dixon, who completed the coarse in 18min 11sec.
These four, however, did not finish in the first four of the race. Being a handicap race, the slowest, and usually youngest members, were sent off first; Bob Brimage starting some 1min. 35sec. behind, in last place.
Thirty-eight minors turned out this year, the largest number for many years, and all completed the course. The first 29 finished within three minutes; many finishing within one second of each other. All competitors took a prize and won others in the club draw which was restricted to those in attendance on the day.
The race was won by Nick Robinson in 20 min. 17sec., who had a handicap of 5min. 10sec.; second was Philip D'Arcy who started in scratch position; third was Tim Guest, one of the club sprinters, whose handicap was 6min. 40sec.
The first ten finishers with their race times were:
1, Nick Robinson 20.17; 2, Phil D'Arcy, 21.05; 3, Tim Guest, 19.20; 4, Paul Delp, 19.57; 5, Gary Henwood, 26.30; 7, Loliya Harison, 26.45; 8, Rick Hemmings, 19.41; 9, Kevin McGee, 20.46; 10, Barb. Majumdar, 19.32.
January 3 is the date of the Cheshire cross-country championships, this year being held at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead. Wallasey should be fielding teams for the colts, boys. and youths races and representatives in the junior and senior race.
