Mr. Alan Pennington, the Oxford University president, who on Friday last equalled the record in the 220 yards race at the Universities' Athletic Union, championship meeting, met with defeat in the final on Saturday. His conqueror was C. B. Holmes, of Manchester, who also won the hundred yards' event. The winner won in the record time of 21.7 secs., beating Pennington's record of 22.3 secs., made last year.
After the White City meeting a team of athletes, including Pennington, went to Paris by air and on Sunday made a clean sweep at the international meeting at the State Pershing. The Wallasey athlete was in grand form, winning the two sprint races. In winning the 100 metres in 10 4-5secs., he finished one yard ahead of E. Borchmeyer, the heavily-built German, who reached the final of the Olympic Games sprint.
Both Pennington and Borchmeyer won their heats in 11secs. In the final Borchmeyer got away in the lead, but at the half-way mark Pennington made a great burst and leapt away.
Pennington again beat Borchmeyer when he won the international invitation 183 metre race, the Prix du Stade, in 19 3-5 secs. The German, who never threatened, finished two yards behind in 20 seconds.
