The match between Wirral A.C. and Wallasey A.C. due to take place last Saturday, was cancelled owing to the dangerous state of the ground. This came as a disappointment to many who had been looking forward to an interesting fixture. Wirral brought a strong team along, including their two foremost runners. S. Davey and B. Calverley, the latter well remembered for his prominent running in the Wallasey colours before joining Wirral A.C.
The two clubs decided to go for a friendly run and this proved to be a sound arrangement as the conditions were far worse than anticipated.
The course was little different to a skating rink except that the ice covering the water-bound stretches would only stand the weight of the lightest runner, and although the Wallasey men managed to steer clear of trouble, the visitors had many tumbles. One runner, however, seemed to ready enjoy himself: He was W. Davey, of Wallasey, the Liverpool & District Junior Champion, who traversed even the most difficult sections at a speed which astounded those behind him ; the more arduous the conditions the better Davey seems to run. His namesake, the Wirral Captain, also ran well, being closely pursued by Calverley. J. Cunningham made a welcome reappearance after sickness and J. Whittingham maintained a good pace throughout.
The Christmas Handicap is being held to-day, over a 4½ miles course with the customary prizes for all finishers.
In conclusion. Wallasey Athletic Club tender their thanks, through the courtesy of "The Wallasey News," to all those who have helped to make the past year a successful one, and wish all their friends, old and new, a very happy Christmas.
