The Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union Six Miles Handicap held at Aintree last Saturday attracted 50 starters, representing seven clubs, The race was won by T. G. Downes, Sefton's Junior Champion and prolific prize-winner, with a start of 22 minutes, his actual time being 39 mins. 30 secs.
Wirral A.C's. Senior Championship was won by S. Davey, an experienced runner and fine Club-man. B, Calverley, the old Wallasey runner, who was holder, did not turn out to defend his title and Sam Dodd, the ex-International runner who was recently reported to be in training again, was also amongst the non-starters.
Wallasey Athletic Club had an easy day in view of the West Lancashire Championships to be held at Makerfield to-day. Wallasey have reasonable chances of success in those championships, especially in the Youth's (under 18) and Junior (under 21) races. F. Fillingham, the brilliant Sutton runner, should have no difficulty in winning the individual title in the Youths' race, but Wallasey are capable of regaining the team title which was won last year. The Junior Championship seems a very open race. J. Hull, of Pilkington Rec, is a well fancied candidate for individual honours but his supporters may be disappointed; W. P. Davey, of Wallasey, was 3rd in this race last year and may have made the improvement necessary to bring him victory. Noel Marples is stronger than last year and, providing he keeps a cool head, will be well to the fore at the finish. The junior team in quite sound and if each member gives his best they should earn a place in the first three. Arthur Williams, Sutton's International runner, should win the Senior Championship over 9 miles for the fourth time in succession. His Club-mates, Tyrer, Edgar, Meadows and Lee will not be far behind him and a Sutton victory seems inevitable. Liverpool Pembroke with a recent inter-club victory over Sutton expect to repeat, that performance, but, unfortunately, inter-club form is not a safe guide. However, J. Johnstone, Pembroke's new champion, should finish in the first three. The season started with the brightest of prospects for Wallasey A.C's. Senior team but a series of misfortunes have greatly diminished the strength of the team and there is no indication of any success in the championship this year. On the brighter side is the news that K. Westmore, the University "crack" has signed for Wallasey, but will not be able to appear until the end of the University season in March.
Excursion trains from Lime Street Station to Earlestown Junction at 1-30 and 2-20 to-day for the Championships. Runners are asked to bring their spiked shoes.
