Ideal weather conditions, perfect course, and a splendid turn-out augured well for the club's last practice run prior to inter-club engagements.
In accordance with this season's practice, the handicap system was again resorted to, and it was found necessary to divide the runners into four packs.
Two new runners, H. Jones and C. Booth, accompanied by H. Pendergest, "clocked off'" at 3-50 p.m., followed three minutes later by the main pack under the leadership of R. Young.
With the usual good-hearted raillery, the fast pack took up the chase five minutes later, and did their utmost to keep ahead of W. R. Richardson and F. K. Ledward. who left headquarters at 4-3 p.m.
The Bidston marshes took the usual toll of pace, and it was hereabouts that the runners began to string out.
The day's honours, however, were easily taken by H. Jones, who managed to maintain his position and arrive home in the lead, accompanied by G. Band.
The finish then became extremely close. T. Tyrer, who occupied third place, was hard pressed by W. G. Williams, J. Edwards and R. G. Hyde. The latter, by the way, is the club's hon. secretary, and his performance shows signs of a "come-back."
F. G. Ambrose and H. C. Binns packed well, and were successful in holding the fast pace set up by F. K. Ledward and (Bill) Richardson for the last two miles.
Hot baths and tea formed a very welcome conclusion to the day's activities.
Those competing in the triangular match with Liverpool Harriers and the North Liverpool Gym Harriers to-day will meet at the Liverpool Town Hall at 2-15 p.m. prompt.
