The club lost its second away match of the season at West Derby last Saturday, over a 6½ miles course; the home team, Sefton A.C., triumphing by the narrow margin of 14 points.
With F. G. Ambrose and H. C. Binns , joining W. R. Richardson on the injured list, the result was not unexpected and the club actually did extremely well in making so close a race of it.
R. Mount took the individual honours for Sefton in the good time of 37 min. 5 secs., leading his clubmate F. Rogers in the final sprint by a few yards.
B. Morgan showed a welcome return to form in annexing 3rd place, being the first Wallasey man to finish. Only his finishing speed over the last mile, however, gave him this distinction, as T. B. Calverley had held this place for the major part of the race.
Never far behind the leaders were K. Baird 7th, and F. K. Ledward 8th, but the latter seems unable to produce his best form this season. L. Bell after a very slow start made considerable progress over the last three miles and eventually finished 9th.
Once again Wallasey had to rely upon their veteran stalwart R. Young 12th, who completed the team by beating H. Jones into 13th place. The latter, after a promising start, tailed off completely in the concluding stages of the race. Results as follows :-
Sefton A.C.: 1, R. Mount; 2, F. Rogers; 4, A. Searl; 5, W. McNamara; 9, A. Hill; 11, J. White. Total 32 points.
Wallasey A.C.: 3, B. Morgan; 6, T. B. Calverley; 7, K. Baird; 8, F. K. Ledward ; 10, L. Bell; 12, R. Young. Total 46 points.
To-day the Club Novice Championship will be decided over the home course (7 miles). The winner will be awarded the Wright Challenge Cup to be held for the ensuing twelve months.
All members who have never won a championship medal, or first handicap prize are eligible to compete.
On present form the race seems likely to resolve itself into a straight race between L. Bell and K. Baird, but H. C. Binns or H. Jones may spring a surprise. The latter pair are extremely erratic but at their best are quite capable of extending the favourites.
The start (3-45 p.m.) and the finish (approx. 4-30 p.m.) can be viewed from the Festival Pavilion, Leasowe-road.
The hon. sec., Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14, Cromer-drive, will be pleased to supply information re the Club's activities to prospective now members.
