Three packs were formed last Saturday and training runs were held over different courses.
A junior contingent under T. B. Calveley covered the usual seven miles course in good time, while H. Jones led a smaller pack over the short Christmas handicap course; a new member, J. Oldfield, showing particular promise.
The seniors ran a full nine miles, traversing the route taken a fortnight ago over Bidston Hill and back via Upton and Moreton. The extra mile was added by continuing the course to Leasowe Embankment and returning via the shore and the golf links. L. Bell was first man home, with R. Young 2nd and W. A. Geddes 3rd.
THE Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championships.
The above championships will be decided at Port Sunlight this afternoon. The youths' race (under 18) is timed to start at 2-30 p.m. and is over one lap of the course, a distance of three miles.
This will be followed by the junior race (two laps or six miles) and the senior race (three laps or nine miles); the club have entered teams in the last two events.
The seniors are unlikely to be at full strength as several of the team are doubtful starters, and with the club captain, W. R. Richardson, still below his best form the chances of a victory are very remote.
The prospects of the junior team finishing in the first three are much rosier, but here again recent injuries to F. G. Ambrose and H. Jones may mar the result.
Whatever the outcome of the team races, however, Wallasey confidently expect to be concerned with the individual junior championship. In T. B. Calveley the club possess one of the most brilliant juniors on Merseyside who is sure to make a great bid for the individual title.
The following teams have been selected. Senior team: W. R. Richardson, L. Bell, F. K. Ledward, G. M. Band, W. A. Geddes, R. Young, J. Davies, N. J. Neale, W. G. Williams and J. Cousins. Reserves: R. G. Hyde and C. Simmonds.
Junior team: F. G. Ambrose, K. Baird, T. B. Calveley, G. Crompton, J. Edwards, H. Jones, R. Leach, and B. Morgan.
The first six to finish from each team count.
The club secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive, will be pleased to supply information re the club's activities.
