Wallasey Athletic Club had three members in the Northern Counties Junior Cross-Country Championships at Lancaster on Saturday.
The race, a particularly gruelling one, owing to the large number of natural obstacles to be negotiated, was held over four laps of a 1¾ miles course.
Unfortunately, the club's main hope, T. B. Calveley, was crowded out at the start and although making up much leeway on the last two laps, he never caught up with the leaders and eventually finished 30th.
K. Baird ran steadily throughout, but B. Morgan must show better judgment if he is to improve. It was only on the last lap that he commenced running really hard and by then it was too late to make any impression on the leaders. However, the experience should prove invaluable to the latter pair, both of whom are eligible to compete in junior championships next year.
The remainder of the club held a handicap over a seven miles course from the Festival Pavilion headquarters, Leasowe-road. J. Edwards (off a handicap of five minutes) ran well, winning comfortably by over a minute from the 2nd man, J. Davies (4 minutes). G. Crompton (4 mins. 30 secs.) was 3rd, and C. Simmonds (7 mins. 30 secs.) 4th.
F. G. Ambrose (1 min. 30 secs.) ran a fine race and had the satisfaction of returning the fastest actual time, 43 mins. 44 secs., beating W. R. Richardson (scratch) by 10 secs, for this distinction.
To-day the club visit North Liverpool Gymnasium Harriers at Aintree. Meet at Exchange Station 2-15 p.m.
Inquiries re membership should be made to the hon. secretary, Mr. R. G, Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive.
