Wallasey A.C. placed the first five men and the 8th to defeat North Liverpool Gymnasium Harriers by 36 points over a six miles course at Aintree.
The club thus amply avenged its unexpected defeat of last season when after placing three in the first four, including W. R. Richardson, who broke the course record, they lost the race owing to poor packing by the rest of the team.
B. Morgan set a cracking pace for the first two miles and soon established a useful lead of 50 yards until a gruelling stretch of plough curbed his speed, enabling T. B. Calveley and W. R. Richardson to overhaul him. The lead then changed hands several times, but eventually T. B. Calveley forged ahead, winning by 20 yards from the 2nd man, W. R. Richardson, and B. Morgan 3rd.
Not far behind the leaders F. G. Ambrose and K. Baird got the better of a hard race with North Liverpool Gymnasium Harriers' leading pair, R. Crosby and L. Ditchfield, while L. Bell (8th) ran well, particularly over the last two miles.
A pleasing feature of the race was the improved running of the Wallasey pack behind the first six. J. Davies (12th), G. Crompton (13th), W. A. Geddes (14th), and F. Thompson (15th) all helped materially to increase the winning margin of points by pegging back North Liverpool's last counting man, G. Henderson, to the 16th position. Results as follows :-
Wallasey A.C. - T. B. Calveley, 1st; W. R. Richardson, 2nd; B. Morgan, 3rd; F. G. Ambrose, 4th; K. Baird, 5th; L. Bell 8th. Total, 23 points.
North Liverpool Gym H. - R. Crosby, 6th; L. Ditchfield, 7th; F. New, 9th; F. Miller, 10th; C. Smith, 11th; G. Henderson, 16th. Total, 59 points.
To-day Wallasey entertain Sefton A C. and a large turn-out is expected for what will be the last inter-club engagement of the season. Sefton A.C. can always be relied upon to place a strong team in the field and the club will need to be at its best if it is to win.
Prospective new members can obtain information re the club's activities from the hon. secretary. Mr. R. G. Hyde. 14 Cromer-drive.
