The club wound up the cross-country season last Saturday with a handicap held over the usual 7¼ miles course.
There was a very poor turn-out, only a, dozen runners competing. This was not surprising however, as the racing season proper finished the week previous with the Club Championship and many members desire a rest in view of the approaching track season.
As was generally expected, the limit men had the best of the day, although R. G. Hyde was unfortunate in wrenching his ankle jumping the Birket, otherwise his long start of 12 minutes would have made him certain of a place in the first three.
J. R. Cousins, off 5 mins. 30 secs., ran a well judged race and after overhauling C. Simmonds (9 mins. 15 secs.) he went on to win by a comfortable margin. Simmonds was surprisingly beaten on the post by N. Marples (4 mins.) who produced a fine turn of speed in the last mile.
F. G. Ambrose (2 mins. 15 secs.) with the 2nd fastest actual time finished 4th, with W. A. Geddes (4 mins 15 secs.) 5th and W. R. Richardson (scratch) 6th. The latter returned 41 minutes 57 secs, for the course, the fastest actual time, but was unable to overtake the leaders.
Placings and times of the first nine were as follows:-
