Mr. A. Pennington, son of Councillor and Mrs. John Pennington, a former scholar of Somerville Preparatory School, Albion-street, Wallasey, and now at Berkhamsted School, repeated his success of last year on Saturday by again winning the 100 yards flat race in the Public. Schools' Sports which were held at the White City, London. He equalled his record time set up last year, but narrowly lost the quarter of a mile flat race, being defeated by a "short yard."
Commenting upon this praiseworthy performance the "Sunday Times" correspondent stated: "As expected, A. Pennington (the A.A.A. junior champion) won the sprint and equalled the previous record. He was away to a beautiful start, he has a fine stride."
The special correspondent ol the "Manchester Guardian" stated that: "A. Pennington had an easy victory, (equalling the record for this event, which was good going, for he had an appreciable east wind against him, and the track was a good deal cut up by multitudinous heats. The hundred is really too short for Pennington, but he has a bright future in the 220 and quarter; his stride is immense and his temperament admirable."
Commenting upon the 440 yards, the "Manchester Guardian" special correspondent declared : "With all respect to the winner, the wrong man won. If Pennington had been in the second lane and Scott in the third nothing could have prevented Pennington from winning. As it was, Scott (the winner) started in the inside lane, where he could see what was happening, and Pennington in the outside lane, where he could see nothing. The result was that Pennington had to run his own race until they reached the straight, where he saw Scott for the first time and found him several yards ahead. Then he began to run with seven-league strides, and in the last twenty-five yards he was coming up hand over fist; another three strides would have closed the gap. One does not forget, of course, that Scott had already run his record half-mile; he is probably, when fresh, the better quarter-miler of the two. Nevertheless it was the draw that won him this particular race.
