For the first, match of the season last Saturday, Wallasey A.C. were entertained by Liverpool Boundary H. at Aintree.
The five miles course normally presents no difficulties and a fast race is usual, but weather conditions on this occasion made the going very heavy, and with several of the regular team absent the club were not too sanguine as to the result.
The race started at 3-45 p.m., and for the first two miles the runners had to meet a strong head wind, during which period E. Cole of Boundary, and K. Baird of Wallasey set the pace with L. Craine and L. Maloney of the home club not far behind.
Eventually, Craine of Boundary, the Liverpool & District Junior Champion, moved up into the lead and with W. R. Richardson in close attendance drew steadily away from the rest of the field. A fast, hard race resulted in the Wallasey captain annexing first place for the visitors by some twenty yards.
With L. Craine an early second, chief interest centred on the duel for 3rd place between the rapidly improving K. Baird and L. Maloney. The former after holding the position most of the distance was a little unlucky to be beaten into 4th place by the stronger finish of the Boundary man.
N. Sharples made a welcome return to form and coming through very fast in the last two miles he experienced no difficulty in forcing E. Cole of Boundary into 6th position. Here Wallasey's success came to an abrupt end, and it was not until Boundary had packed the remainder ol their team that the scarlet and blue colours again hove in sight. J. Cunningham, however, a first season runner, did extremely well to finish 11th. L. T. Hughes 13th, and J. Davies 14th, completed the team.
F. G. Ambrose, who usually can be relied upon to finish among the leaders was compelled to retire early in the race with chest trouble - a serious blow to the club's hopes, and largely responsible for its narrow defeat by thirteen points. Full results as follows :-
Liverpool Boundary Harriers: L. Craine 2; L. Maloney 3; E. Cole 6; W. H. Rimmer 7; B. Wilkinson 8; J. Tunstall 9. Total 35 points.
Wallasey Athletic Club: W. R. Richardson 1; K. Baird 4; N. Marples 5; J. Cunningham 11; L. Hughes 13; J. L. Davies. Total 48 points.
To-day a club run will be held from headquarters, Leasowe-road, at 3-15 p.m.
