Fine weather favoured the club's third annual Novice Championship.
Trail was laid by W. G. Williams and J. Edwards over a 4½ miles course and the competitors got away to a good start at 3-30 p.m. As was to be expected, the recent rain made the going very heavy, and in particular the waterlogged state of the Bidston marshes slowed up the pace considerably. Consequently there was no early breakaway on the part of the speedier members and the field was still well together when the turn was made for "home" at Reed's-lane.
From this point, however, the favourites for the race, N. Marples and H. Jones, rapidly opened up a gap between themselves and the next pair, L. Hughes and Yeoman. The two leaders were still together with a quarter of a mile of the finish, when Marples made a great effort which won him the race by seven seconds.
L. Hughes (3rd), finishing within a minute of the winner, received the first handicap prize, while Yeoman (4th) took the second handicap prize. The latter ran a fine race for one so young and is to be commended for his pluck in completing the course despite a serious fall in the early stages.
The West Lancashire novice team race will be held at Makerfield to-day at 3-15 p.m. Sixteen teams drawn from the Liverpool & District and West Lancashire area will contest the race. Seven starters comprise a team, of which the first four to finish count for team placings.
Wallasey A.C. will be represented by the following: K. Baird, J. Edwards, L. Hughes, J. Davies, H. Jones, N. Marples, and W. R. Richardson. Competitors and supporters meet Lime-street station 2-5 p.m.
A club run will be held also from headquarters. Arrive in time for a 3-15 start.
Prospective members may obtain information from the hon. secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive, Wallasey.
