The headquarters of the Wallasey Athletic Club was the scene of considerable activity last Saturday when the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union held its first 5-mile handicap of the season from that venue.
A good entry of about 50 runners had been received representing all the important clubs in the district, and the local club was well to fore, nine members being down to compete. The trail was laid by R. G. Hyde and R. Young, the course chosen having several good jumps and a variety of going varying from main roads to deep mud.
The race was a very good one and provided a win for K. Cookson of Liverpool Pembroke Harriers, E. V. Hulme and R. Mount, both of Sefton Harriers, being second and third respectively. Fastest actual times were recorded by H. Pimblett, also of Sefton, but N. J. Neale, of Wallasey ran him very close, being, only four seconds slower.
The prizes were presented by Mr. A. G. Nicholson and a most successful meeting concluded with a number of speeches, Mr, F. C. O'Connell, a past president ol the Wallasey A.C., being amongst the speakers.
Ken Glover, Wallasey's champion sprinter, was one of the numerous helpers present whose work behind the scenes in ministering to the needs of the competitors was partly responsible for the success of the event.
This afternoon, at 3 o'clock Sefton Harriers and Liverpool Harriers will visit the Wallasey club and a three-cornered race will be held over a course of about seven miles. Trail-layers should report to the Wallasey Village Festival Committee's pavilion, Leasowe-road, not later than 2-50 p.m., and all members are requested to turn up arid make the gathering a success.
