The Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union opened the season under good weather conditions on Saturday afternoon.
The entries as regards numbers were very promising, including many of the best harriers from the surrounding district. J. Sheridan (Sefton H.) and J. Tennant (Wirral H.) laid the trail from the Knotty Ash Hotel, and the run led through splendid country, suitably dotted with fences and ditches, to the neighbourhood of Knowsley Estate. The return through Roby and Prescot was made at a good pace, the distance of six miles being covered in fine time. Both seniors and juniors concluded the run with a mile break, and were in splendid condition at the finish.
Wallasey enthusiasts may congratulate their representatives on the good performance out of their own country, the best two places being secured by Wallasey. The placings in the senior group were as follows:- 1, W. A. A. Jeffery (Wallasey Harriers); 2, P. Scott (Wallasey Harriers); 3, J. T. Rimmer (Sefton Harriers).
The junior places were allotted as under:- 1, S. W. Bird (Wirral H.); 2, F. Bibby (Knotty Ash H.); 3, A. Olley (Knotty Ash H.).
The muster prize was won by the Wirral Harriers, who started 28 runners, the other clubs coming next in order of number being:- Knotty Ash 25, Liverpool Boundary Harriers 21, Sefton H. 19, West Cheshire H. 17, Wallasey H. 16, Liverpool Pembroke 13, Liverpool Oddfellows 9, and Liverpool H. 3.
The quick revival of interest in cross-country runs gives decided encouragement to those interested, and it is to be hoped that the old English pastime will have many fresh enthusiasts this season.
