On Saturday last the final racing event of the season took place, and consisted of the club championship. About a dozen member's lined up for the start, the bad weather evidently affecting the turn out, but happily not interfering with the race.
The trail was laid by the captain (A. G. Nicholson) over a splendid cross-country course of about seven miles, starting from the Ship Inn, and finishing under the railway bridge in Leasowe-road. At the start, R. Young (the holder of the championship for two years), Scott, and Plant took the lead, but the last-named who was evidently much off form, soon fell away, though still keeping third place. A. G. Scoins, who was supposed to have an outside chance, worked his way up to fourth, but in spite of some fine running could not better his position. The race resolved itself into a struggle between Young and Scott, neither being able to shake the other off until coming on to the road half a mile from home. Young then got away, eventually winning comfortably. The first six placings were as follow:-
1 - R. Young 41 8
2 - P. Scott 41 37
3 - C. Plant 42 30
4 - A. G. Scoins 42 42
5 - T. Hughes 44 45
6 - F. Eastwood 47 30
The result of the sealed handicap was - 1, P. Scott; 2, R. Young; 3. A. G. Scoins; 4. T. Hughes; 5 E. Plant. As Scott and Young won second and first medals respectively and therefore being ineligible, the first prize went to A. G. Scoins.
