The cross-country season with this club is now thoroughly under way, and prospects are particularly bright. All the old runners are available, and with new members becoming quite numerous, the club should prove considerably stronger than last year.
So far nothing in the way of racing has been attempted, as the various runs have been chiefly jaunts over the country at a go-as-you-please gait, with the idea of thoroughly initiating the new runners into the joys and mysteries of the grand old cross-country sport. Taken quietly at first it in surprising how health-giving a pastime is, and anyone who wants real enjoyment should join and see for himself. The country available allows plenty of scope, there being any amount of variety, so now is the time. Last Saturday the club journeyed to Higher Tranmere to engage in a friendly run with their old friends West Cheshire Harriers, from the latter's new headquarters, Stuart-road. There was a good muster of runners, the pack numbering 29, being paced by W. Cullen and whipped in by the West Cheshire captain, G. A. Walker. The country was in splendid condition, and a nice pace was kept throughout, this making the run extremely enjoyable. The old seven miles course in the neighbourhood of Storeton, Clatterbridge, Barnston and Brimstage was negotiated, this being perhaps the best bit of racing country to be found for a good many miles round.
An important club fixture will be realised to-day in the five-mile handicap, which will take place from headquarters, Fairhaven Institute, Seaview-road. There is a fairly lengthy list of entries, comprising several new runners, whose chances for honours are causing no small amount of interest and anticipation.
