Alan ran for England in 1936 in the 100 and 200 metres, and was second in the Paris Exhibition 100 metres, when the world's record was broken. He was president of Oxford University Athletic Club, 1937-38, and held the Oxford record for quarter-mile. He was second in the English quarter mile last year, and intends running at this distance in future, as a member of the Achilles Club.
