The subject of our sketch this week commenced his running career in 1895, his first success being at Neston in that year when he took the premier prize in the 440 yards flat race.
In 1896 he won third prize in the 440 yards at Neston and at Wallasey Grammar School carried off the 100 yards, 440 yards, 440 yards walk, one mile and long jump, and thereby secured the school challenge cup. 1897 must be considered his best year for he won first prizes in 120 yards, 440 yards and novelty race at Neston; first 440 yards Liscard Gala, first 440 yards New Brighton Tower, a fine £10 10s prize, second 880 yards Liverpool University, and first 440 yards Liverpool University, in which race he ran the full distance in 53 3/5 seconds winning the Kohn Challenge Cup.
In the winter on 1897-8 he joined the now defunct Wallasey Harriers and on nearly every occasion of an inter-club race was the first home. This closed his career until 1905, when he again went into training and was placed first 200 yards West Cheshire Harriers, first 440 yards Bakewell and third 880 yards at Heswall. In 1906-1907 he ran cross-country for Homecroft Harriers and figured prominently in the inter-club races finishing the season by winning the three miles handicap, doing the full course in the good time of 16 mins 55 secs.
Rothery is a good sportsman and is at all times ready to help the younger runners by advice as to training etc. at which he himself has proved so successful.
